An irritated, itchy scalp accompanied by white, yellow or silvery flakes of dead skin in your hair that end up on your clothes are the telltale signs of dandruff. Dandruff is incredibly common in people of all ages. A shampoo formulated to treat dandruff is almost always sufficient to manage the problem, so you won't need to resort to drastic measures and you won't have to throw out all of your black clothes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to your local pharmacy or grocery and locate the health and beauty products aisle. Dandruff shampoos will usually be found with the other shampoos and soaps or they may have their own section.

  2. Step 2

Read the labels on the bottles of anti dandruff shampoo. Most will have the same or similar active ingredients. Non-prescription dandruff shampoos will vary slightly in their ingredients from one brand to another, so the best way to select the one that is right for you is to just pick one and try it out.

  3. Step 3

Select one of the most common brands available. Take the bottle home and follow the instructions on the label. You may want to use the shampoo daily for a while, then use it about twice per week until your dandruff clears up.

  4. Step 4

Select another common over-the-counter anti dandruff shampoo if you are not satisfied with the results of your first choice. While the active ingredients in most are similar, slight differences in the formulas may react differently with the pH level of your scalp, leading to better results.

  5. Step 5

Be prepared to use your anti dandruff shampoo continually. Not all dandruff will clear up and go away. Anti-dandruff shampoos can manage the problem quite easily, but you may still need to use the shampoo up to twice per week.

  6. Step 6

Select an anti-dandruff shampoo that contains ketoconazole, a synthetic antifungal ingredient. Ketoconazole is found to be extremely effective in treating dandruff and is also used to combat conditions like ringworm, athlete's foot and jock itch.

  7. Step 7

Visit your doctor if your dandruff is unmanageable. Using an anti-dandruff shampoo twice per week should be sufficient to manage the problem, but if not it may be indicative of a more serious problem. Your doctor can tell you about other treatment options and may be able to give you a prescription dandruff treatment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a bottle of anti-dandruff shampoo in your shower next to your regular shampoo. Since dandruff may never be "cured," you'll probably need to use it every so often.
