How to Install VirtueMart on a Joomla Site

VirtueMart is a free, open source shopping cart solution developed for Joomla, a content management system. It is coded in PHP format and can be fully integrated into any Joomla e-commerce website. Much like Joomla, VirtueMart can be modified and customized with no restrictions. In addition to shopping cart features, VirtueMart can be run as a catalog. It can handle numerous categories, products, customers and shipping modules. You can even sell downloadable goods such as MP3 files, software and videos.   Download the full VirtueMart software package from the Virtuemart.com website. Save the downloaded file to your computer desktop or hard drive.

  Install the core component for VirtueMart. Log in to your Joomla administrator page. Click on the "Installers" link and select "Components" from the drop-down menu. Click on the "Browse" button and select the file named "com_Virtuemart.x.x.tar.gz". Click the "Upload File and Install" button. The core VirtueMart element installs on your Joomla server.

  Install a VirtueMart module that will give you access to the VirtueMart shopping cart. Click the "Installers" link again and select "Modules" from the drop-down menu. Click on the "Browse" button and select "mod_Virtuemart.x.x.tar.gz" from the installation package. Click the "Upload File and Install" button. Wait for the installer to finish. The VirtueMart shopping cart component is now ready for use.

  Click on the "Components" link on your Joomla administrator page. You will see that the VirtueMart option now appears on the drop-down menu. Click that link and then click on the "Go Directly to Store" option. You may notice a short delay – it's very important that you not interrupt the process. Once VirtueMart is fully configured, you can use it to operate an online store on your Joomla website.
