With a movie in the works and a revival of “all things 1980s” in full swing, this is the perfect time to get on the G.I. Joe toy collecting boom before it really takes off.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know your Joes. The toy line debuted in 1964 with 12-inch dolls, the size of Barbie. It regained popularity in the 1980s with the launch of the "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" line. These figures were 3 3/4 inches tall and featured moveable arms and legs and the popular kung fu grip.

  2. Step 2

Make sure what you buy is what you want. Almost all incarnations of the G.I. Joe line have been reissued at one time or another. In 2007, for instance, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the “Real American Hero” line, Hasbro reissued many of the classic 1980s action figures. So if you're getting the toys as an investment, make sure you're not buying the reissues.

  3. Step 3

Although the kung fu grip and flexible joints of the “Real American Hero” line helped raise the popularity of the toys, it also made collecting more difficult. If you can find figures in their original packages, that is always preferred. If you can't, check out the arms and legs. Make sure the joints are sturdy and that the limbs aren't glued on.

  4. Step 4

EBay and other online auction sites are a great place to find toys. However if you're buying a figure out of its original package, read the description carefully. All of the “Real American Hero” line came with accessories, like weapons and backpacks. Having the original equipment increases the value.

Tips & Warnings
  • Just because a toy is new doesn't mean it's worthless. Look for words like "limited edition."
  • The more-popular characters might be easier to sell, but sometimes the least-popular toys are worth more. These were often underproduced and sold less, making them more rare.
