Determining the Type of Automobile You Will Purchase

Step1
Decide what types of automobile you may wish to purchase. Do you want a minivan, SUV, a pickup truck, a large car or a small economy car? If you already know for sure, you can skip this section.
Step2
Determine your needs. Who will ride in the automobile? Five children and you and your wife or just you? Seven people might require an SUV or van, whereas you could purchase something sportier for just yourself.
Step3
Think about the gas mileage. If you are a commuter on a budget, an SUV might be above your means, since they usually don't get the best gas mileage. However, if you're just going to drive locally, a large luxury car could be an option.
Step4
Look at the price. You may not have a large vehicle in your budget. What about sportiness? Is style important to you? What's available in your area? (Some vehicles might only be sold in Germany.)
Step5
Limit yourself to about three types of automobile or less.

How to Decide on Safety Features You Need

Step1
Will children be riding in the car? Think about who will be riding in the vehicle: small children, adults, elderly, handicapped? This will give you an idea what to look for in safety features.
Step2
Find out what new and standard safety features are out there. There are many places to find this out on the internet, by searching car safety features. Standard features now include frontal air bags, antilock brakes, safety belts and the like. New features include head restraints to keep you from jolting your head back in a rear-end collision, side air bags, stability devices, which help you not roll over around a big turn, and audible warning devices which detect when you are about to hit an object.
Step3
Determine what specific features are available for certain needs? There are devices to make safety belts better for children, and front air bags designed for shorter and smaller drivers and passengers, for instance.
Step4
Decide which safety features you want and need.

How to Decide on a Safe New Automobile

Step1
Find automobiles with the car safety features you want. This could take awhile. You might choose instead to find find articles on the internet about the safest cars out there. Type 'safest cars on the road,' and you will pull up many articles. You could just pick one of these autos, of the type you want.
Step2
Choose the brand you wish to buy. If it's Toyota, go to Toyota's website and pull up SUVs. Find out what new and standard safety features each one offers.
Step3
With some time spent researching online and then visiting the dealerships, you should be able to find a new car that is the type you need and has most or all of your desired safety features!

Tips & Warnings

  • With the increasing price for gas at the pump, you might wish to weight gas mileage as a large factor in the choice for type of vehicle to purchase.
  • You can go online to look at different types of automobiles or browse dealerships.
  • Remember that with more features, the price of the car will go up. Find a balance between what you would like and what you will need in terms of safety.
  • If you have no budget, there's no harm in having extra safety features.
  • When you look for the safest cars on the road, you will pull up articles from places like Forbes and CNN money (see Resources).
  • The vehicle you purchase could make all the difference in the outcome of any auto accident you are in. A safer car could be the deciding factor in a minor compared to a major injury.

on 1/5/2008 This is a great idea. I would hate to ride around in a car with my children only to find out months later that it is not what I thought it was.
