Water marks are caused when water is dripped on a piece of wood furniture. The water leaks into the wood and leaves behind a white spot. If you attempt to remove the water mark right away, you probably won't leave behind a permanent mark on the wood.

From Quick Guide: Removing Stains from Furniture
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put a cloth over the area. Use the cloth to gently buff away at the water mark. It is important that you do not press too hard, since this can cause the water to become even more embedded into the wood.

  2. Step 2

Continue to wipe at the stain until the water is completely soaped up. If this has removed the stain, no further steps are required.

  3. Step 3

Find a furniture polish that has an oil base. Attempt to buff at the stain with the furniture polish until it has completely vanished.

  4. Step 4

Mix together baking soda and water. This paste can be used if the other methods have been unsuccessful at getting rid of the mark.

  5. Step 5

Cover the water mark with a generous layer of the paste. Leave it on the spot for several hours. Wipe it away with a dry cloth and the stain should be gone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people use mayonnaise as a way to remove water marks. It is placed on the spot and left overnight to absorb the stain.
  • If you have an antique piece of wood furniture, be cautious when using any products to remove a water mark. Some finishes may become permanently damaged when exposed to certain substances.
