Archery is the practice of shooting arrows with a bow and has been used in combat and hunting for more than 10,000 years. It was replaced by the gun on the battlefield in the 1600s and is considered a precision sport. The four major types of bows in use today are the crossbow, longbow, short bow and re-curved bow, also known as a composite bow.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Expect archery to have a steep initial learning curve. The basic unit of skill is the complete shot because you can't practice part of a shot. This means that all of the skills must be taught at the beginning, unlike many other sports.

  2. Step 2

Acquire the essential equipment. The minimum equipment needed is a bow and arrows. In practice, an armguard, finger tab, quiver and target also will be required.

  3. Step 3

Wear an armguard. It fits on the forearm and protects the sensitive inner forearm from the recoil or "slap" of the bowstring.

  4. Step 4

Use a finger tab. It fits on the fingers and protects the fingertips from the friction caused by releasing the bowstring.

  5. Step 5

Learn 10 basic steps of archery. These steps consist of the stance and posture, nocking the arrow, string hook and bow hand placement, set up, drawing the bow, anchor, load and transfer, aim, release and follow through. These steps must be performed correctly to shoot an arrow correctly and should be covered in the first lesson.
