Interpret Abstract Art

Abstract art is different from most art. It is not as much about the subject as about the feeling it invokes. Interpreting abstract art takes more than simply looking at the art. For abstract art to become more than just "a piece," the artist must invoke feelings in the viewer. Interpreting abstract is a very enjoyable task if done correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the art, but do not search for meaning. Great abstract art evokes feelings or objects within the viewer. Do not focus on one aspect of the art; focus on the piece as a whole.

    • 2

Ask yourself if the piece uses colors, shadows and textures well. Study the art to see if these elements are complementing each other or contradicting each other.

    • 3

Find out the feelings the art evokes. These feelings are created by colors and shapes. Elements that contradict each other create feelings of turmoil, strife, fear, anxiety, hate or sadness. Elements that complement each other create happier, calmer feelings.

    • 4

Read the title of the art. The title may allow you to see the abstract art from another perspective. Ask yourself if the title changed your thoughts about the piece. Some artists also write a small piece explaining the art to the viewer. Some abstract art does not need an explanation because it evokes different feelings and emotions in each viewer.

    • 5

Allow yourself enough time to enjoy and connect with the piece. Abstract art may make an emotional connection with the viewer. Let yourself enjoy and understand the art and what you're feeling because of it.
