Registry Mechanic is a simple, but effective program you can use to scan your registry for errors and fix them. After installing reliable antivirus software, running a good registry cleaner like Registry Mechanic should be your first step in addressing your computer's glitches and bugs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Download Registry Mechanic from the PC Tools Software website, if you haven't already. The installation file is relatively small, so the download shouldn't take too long.
Step2
Open Registry Mechanic. Depending on the preferences you set when it was installed, the program might have started up along with Windows. If this is the case, double-click its icon in the System Tray (the group of icons in the Task Bar next to the Windows Clock). If it's not the case, simply open the Start Menu, click on "Programs," then open the folder named "Registry Mechanic."
Step3
Click the "Scan Your Registry" button in the Registry Mechanic main window.
Step4
Wait for the scan to finish. Depending on the speed of your processor, this can take a while. Be patient.
Step5
Browse through the results of the scan, if you're interested in seeing what Registry Mechanic found. They're organized by file type (font, .dll, startup program and so on), so you can use the tabs on the left to navigate through the results.
Step6
Click the "Repair" button to fix the errors that were discovered during the scan.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the "Compact Registry" function to eliminate wasted space in your registry and speed up your computer.
