Step 1
Realize there are risks involved in P2P file sharing. It's possible to download viruses, spyware, adware or other unwanted software. Minimize your risks by using quality antivirus, antispyware and firewall software which are updated regularly. Set your computer's maintenance schedule for regular scans.
-
Step 2
Choose a reputable P2P file sharing software. Research the types available online, visit online forums, and ask your friends their opinions.
-
Step 3
Know that downloading copyrighted files is illegal, but that doesn't always stop people from doing it. Make sure you download only public domain files. Educate your family about P2P file sharing. Monitor your family's use of the Internet to make sure they aren't downloading any unwanted files.
-
Step 4
Connect with a P2P network through your file sharing software. It will ask you what you are looking for or sharing and connect you with someone who has what you need.
-
Step 5
Use your antivirus software to scan files before you download them. Keep your antivirus software updated because new viruses are created daily.
-
Step 6
Be careful about where you store your files. Keep them all together in a separate folder, sometimes called "My Shared Files." Back up important files on a CD or other storage device before file sharing.

on 1/19/2009 I've had problems with viruses from p2p stuff before - so anyone reading this, i'd thought i'd recommend a safer program: mp3 rocket. tech support is awesome (i don't know how to use computers that well). Def worth checking out: So the newest version of frostwire out is called mp3 rocket. It's slightly faster, offers more music and the UI is more sleek. They also respond to tech questions via email REALLY fast: here is another link to a site that offers full tech support for a slightly faster p2p software: http://free-music-fast.com/click.php?APID=133&affID=0001443
