How to Change an ID3 Tag in Winamp

Winamp is a popular MP3 player with many configurable options and a built-in equalizer. The device is fully skinable. Sometimes it will identify the songs in its playlist in a way that doesn't match how the file is named on your computer. The song's ID3 tag, information kept inside the file itself, typically causes this annoying problem.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open Winamp and have it display your playlist.

  2. Step 2

Right-click on any song to bring up the playlist's submenu. Choose "View File Info" to bring up the ID3 tag interface.

  3. Step 3

Look over the information presented, which is all the data in the file relating to the song. You can freely edit the information, adding extra information or deleting unwanted parts. This screen also contains all the information for both an ID3 version 1 and an ID3 version 2 tag. Generally speaking, any recent program that can read one can read the other, but a particularly old program may be able to read only v1.

  4. Step 4

Update the file when you're done and it should change immediately on the Winamp playlist.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you uncheck the ID3 boxes in the tag interface, it displays the MP3 by filename only.
