Body slimmers are amazing inventions for those of us who haven't had a flat stomach since puberty or who are just five pounds away from looking great in that little black dress. Through the miracle of Spandex, Lycra and other elasticized fabrics, bulges are smoothed and girths reduced. The options for shapewear abound, so consider your choices carefully. Here's how to choose a body slimmer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how much slimming you need the body slimmer to do. You can get bra-to-knee body slimmers, simple control panel panties and everything in between. It would be nice to say that wearing shapewear is as comfortable as cotton undies, but unfortunately by the end of an evening out, you'll be feeling the Spandex--so if the dress doesn't reveal your thighs, avoid encasing them in a girdle. Your thighs will thank you.

  2. Step 2

Choose a brand. Spanx is known for controlling postpartum pooches while Nancy Ganz is beloved for her seamless slimmers. Lipo in a Box products come complete with underwire bras and thongs. Ask friends for recommendations or read online reviews.

  3. Step 3

Choose your correct size. Ordering too large a size will mean less support and control than you want. But if you go a size down, you can end up with bulges oozing out of the shapewear. If possible, try the body slimmer on in the store to make sure it fits.

  4. Step 4

Try on your body slimmer underneath your outfit to make sure it still fits well. It might be too baggy if your shapewear is strong enough--in which case you'll have to head back to the mall in search of new clothes to go with your new body slimmer.
