If you just went to Monte Carlo and found the nearest casino, then you already know that to play European Roulette you need to calculate a different way. There's a difference in the way the game is played.

From Quick Guide: Playing Roulette
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase your chips. Chips have no denomination in roulette but are simply a color. The denomination is decided when the player buys in. For example, you give the dealer $100 and he gives you 20 yellow chips. Each chip is now worth $5.

  2. Step 2

Notice that there is no double zero. This creates a better set of odds for the player making a bet. It reduces the odds by giving one less opportunity to be wrong, and gives the even/odd, black/red, or 1-18/19-36 better a big jump in their favor.

  3. Step 3

Find out whether they offer "En prison" features. The "En prison" rule is in effect if you make an even money bet (black/red, odd/even, or 1-18/19-36) and the ball lands on the zero. Either your bet is frozen and returned if the next spin would cause you to win the bet, or, in some casinos, half the bet is returned.

  4. Step 4

Confirm that your inside bet total is table minimum. The outside total should also be the minimum.

  5. Step 5

Place an outside bet. Outside bets have lower returns. Examples of the bets are red or black. These pay even. You can also bet on rows or columns of numbers and even or odd numbers.

  6. Step 6

Decide on an inside bet. These bets are placed on individual numbers or number combinations that are next to each other on the inside of the board. A four corner bet example would place the chip so that it touches 4 numbers on the corners. If it hits any of the numbers, the payoff is 8 to 1. Placing the chip on one number and hitting pays 35 to 1.
