Sambo is known as the "martial art without a weapon." Originally taught to the Russian military, sambo takes its influences from many other arts. The technical movements and physical exertion of the sport means that dressing in the right attire is a crucial part of sambo success.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Sambo shoes
  • Stretch shorts and tshirt
  • Jacket and belt
  • Protective headgear

Step1
Check the rules of the tournament. Some types of sambo require contestants to wear headgear and others don't. If you have to wear protective gear, ensure that the chin strap is securely fastened, won't slip down and that it fits firmly on your head without being too tight.
Step2
Have the right basics such as comfortable soft leather sambo shoes (borcovki), stretch shorts, tshirt and a kurtka, which may have handles on the shoulders. These are normally made of high quality cotton, which allows you to move easily. See resources for different products.
Step3
Decide which is the right combination for you. Sambo fighters often wear different outfits depending on their personal preferences, so try fighting in different gear and see which is the most comfortable for you.
Step4
Pick the right colors for your outfit. Depending on the category and type of competition, you may be required to wear specific colors to show your status or membership to a particular club.
Step5
Wear the right size. In order to be able to move freely, your dress should give you room to move easily in any position while at the same time not being too loose so it gets in your way.
Step6
Dress carefully to ensure there are no loose threads and that your belt is securely fastened. Avoid buttons or fastenings that stick out and could cause a potential injury.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have longer hair, make sure it is tied back securely and won't fall over your face.
  • Personalize your outfit with your club name or slogan.
