How to Repair a Torn Parachute

A skydiver assumes the risk of injury with participation in the sport, but there are certain dangers one can actively avoid, such as a torn parachute. Parachute canopy repair is important to execute properly. If you notice a snag or tear upon inspection of your parachute, follow the steps outlined here for a variety of repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Use either the zigzag stitch or the straight lock stitch setting on your sewing machine to fix a tear in a parachute seam. Contact the canopy manufacturer to find out the correct machine setting to use. Follow the original seam line for your repair, and be sure the suspension line hangs free if you need to fix a radial seam.

Fix a tear with very small stitches made at 90-degree angles to the flaw. Expand the reach of your stitches to include the area around the damaged part of your parachute canopy. Ensure the chute doesn't pucker after you sew it.

Add a patch to a larger tear or snag. Choose the correct material for your patch depending on the type of parachute, and overlap the edges of the hole enough to provide a strong repair. Sew all sides of the patch with the proper gauge thread, and over-stitched at any raw edges.
