How to Put More Joy into Family Life
The other day Joy to the World by Three Dog Night was playing on my car radio and instead of focusing on my long list of errands, instantly I was singing along with the lyrics. There I was behind the wheel, stuck in a traffic jam, and bouncing in time with the beats, happily absorbed in the free expression of the song. Such a spontaneous light-hearted joy was enough to put a positive spin on what could have been a stressed filled day of obligations. Often we think of joy as happening when things are going smoothly, but this musical reprieve reminded me that it is possible to squeeze joy into our daily routine. When you overwhelmed between duties of homework and housework why not tap into the simple pleasures that make life joyful.

1
Enjoy the world around you.
Children notice the small things and get a kick out of the ordinary. as adults we often get so caught up in your to do list that we forget to notice the cute antics of our children. Notice how full of enthusiasm they are, how the squeal with glee, how they wiggly and laugh. -
2
Infuse mundane routine with silliness.
Walk silly, talk silly, don't be so up tight.Put a spring your step. -
-
3
Ask your kids: "What makes you happy?"
Have a family dinner discussion on the topic of happiness and joy. Ask yourself the same question. -
4
Take your family on a moonlight stroll.
Point out the moon and the stars. Talk about the beauty of nature, notice the wind. By drawing children's attention to nature, you bestow them with a life long appreciation for our planet and for being alive. -
5
Do the unexpected in the middle of the week.
Have a picnic in the living room, have a slumber party in sleeping bags on the floor, organize photo album, write a poem together, make up nonsensical words, turn off the television and play a board game. -
6
Put fun into chores.
Play music and do a dance around the kitchen while taking turns cleaning the dishes. Ask the kids what music they like, teach them the words to your favorite song. -
7
Adopt an attitude of joy.
Make it your intention to find a simple joy each day and acknowledge the joy out loud. By doing so you will be giving yourself and your family permission to find happiness in the simple pleasures.

This was great! Thank you. I am a single Mom of 2 girls. One almost 5 and one is 6 months. Its hard to show the lighthearted side of myself when I am schlepping kids from here to there, getting myself ready in the morning.. driving kids to and from the babysitter.. It shows me that I need to stop and smell the roses and not always be in such a rush. I know its important to be on time.. but I need to establish a good attitude from the beginning and then hopefully my Lil girls will follow with good attitudes! I need to put their cds on in the car after I get them situated,.makes for a more pleasureable commute!
