How to Change the Spark Plugs on a 1992 BMW 318i

This article will cover the proper procedures on how to change spark plugs on a BMW 318i.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spark plug socket
  • Extension, preferably with a lock on the spark plug end
  • Rachet
  • Spark plug connector extractor or equivalent
  • Spark plug Gap tool
  • Ft Lb torque wrench
  • New spark plugs
  1. Step 1

    **Make sure that the engine is cool before removing spark plugs. Removing spark plugs from a hot engine may cause damage to the cylinder head.

  2. Step 2

    Remove the spark plug access cover.

    Use a BMW spark plug connector extractor (pictured)to pull out the spark plug connectors. You need to lay the ends of the wires in order or mark them to make sure you get them back in the correct order.

    If a BMW spark plug connector extractor is unavailable you can use spark plug wire pliers as in the accompanying picture.

    Remove the old spark plugs from the cylinder head.
    *Make sure you use a real spark plug socket that has the rubber insert. Without this insert the spark plugs may fall out of the socket and also you may crack one of the new ones during installation.*

  6. Step 6

    Gap the new spark plugs to (0.030). Install the new spark plugs by hand. DO NOT use the ratchet to start the new spark plugs. Torque the spark plugs to 22 ft. lbs.

  7. Step 7

    CAUTION: If you drop one of the spark plugs during installation, please recheck the gap before installing!!!!!

  8. Step 8

    Reinstall the spark plug connectors making sure they go all the way down. Most of the time you will hear a click when it seats on the end of the spark plug.

  9. Step 9

    Reinstall the spark plug access cover.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not remove spark plugs while the engine is hot.
  • Use a spark plug socket with rubber insert.
  • Always check and gap the new spark plugs.
  • Do not start the plugs with the ratchet, start them by hand.
  • If you drop one recheck the gap.
