In a medical emergency, seconds can mean the difference between life and death. By remaining calm and knowing what to do, you can help save the life of a family member or friend when a medical emergency occurs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Learn CPR, as well as other first-responder procedures. They can make the difference between life and death.
Step2
Know the best route to the hospital or clinic from your home.
Step3
Clearly post the numbers of your doctor or clinic by the phone.
Step4
Keep a list of medications being used by members of the household.
Step5
In the event of an injury, do not move the individual unless clearly necessary for safety or if breathing appears to be impaired.
Step6
Call for help immediately. Don't try to assess the seriousness of a situation yourself. Emergency personnel would rather receive a false alarm than risk being called to the scene too late.
Step7
Provide as much relevant information as you can to emergency personnel. This will help them assess the situation and begin care with minimum delay.
Step8
If possible, have the individual's medications on hand to give to emergency personnel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seconds can make a difference in a medical emergency. Being prepared can make the difference between life and death.
  • Slow down and remain calm when calling 911 and talking to emergency personnel.

on 10/25/2007 Great tips, John! I would also recommend pro-actively obtaining CPR and First Aid certifications. Also, if you own a business or you frequently welcome high-risk folks into your home, invest in an AED. They've come down in price significantly in the past few years. Finally, my EMS buddies recommend programming the number of someone to call in the event of an emergency into your cell phone (e.g. you're unconscious). This number should be labeled as ICE for In Case of Emergency.
