Prevent Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis occurs when substances called plaque begin to build up in the walls of the arteries. The plaque is typically made up of calcium, cholesterol, fatty substances and waste products. Atherosclerosis can lead to a heart attack or stroke because it limits the blood flow to the heart. You should take steps to prevent atherosclerosis from occurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop smoking if you are a smoker. Smoking damages the artery walls and makes it easier for plaque to build up.

    • 2

Examine your diet. Poor diet is one of the many causes of atherosclerosis. Diets that are high in fat and cholesterol are very dangerous to your health. Replace fatty and sweet foods with whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

    • 3

Plan to exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. Exercise lowers cholesterol, blood pressure and the fat content in your blood. A person who exercises greatly reduces their chance of developing atherosclerosis.

    • 4

Visit your doctor for regular physicals. During a complete physical, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are checked. If any of these levels are high, you and your doctor can work towards lowering them.

    • 5

Monitor blood sugar levels. People who have diabetes and do not control their sugar will be more likely to develop atherosclerosis.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are having difficulty quitting smoking, ask your doctor for help. There are many stop smoking aids available over the counter and by prescription.

  • It is never too early to begin a prevention plan for atherosclerosis. You don't want to be forced to make lifestyle adjustments because of a stroke or heart attack.
