A taser is not only a crime fighting tool for law enforcement, but they are now readily available as self defense items that can be carried by individuals. Use these steps to learn more about tasers and where and how you can buy one of your own.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know what to look for in a taser. How far is the range? How big is the taser? Women will want something that fits in a purse. You also look for safety features that keep the taser from activating without your control and warranties or other features you may want.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you are not living in a state where taser guns are illegal. These states are Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

  3. Step 3

Shop around online to find out the models and features that are available, such as the Small Fry 700,000 volt Mini Stun Gun for only $59.99. You will want to compare features to make sure you are getting an accurate price comparison.

  4. Step 4

Find a local self defense product store to compare features and prices. It will also give you the option of buying with a better warranty and without shipping. You will also know you are dealing with a reputable company when you have a store to shop from.

Tips & Warnings
  • Go to the Taser company website to learn more about the development of tasers and their expected use. They also have their taser products divided by consumer, law enforcement and military headings, so there is no confusion as to what you as the consumer should and can buy.
  • Make sure you know how to properly use a taser. They can be very dangerous to you and others if not used the right way.

on 10/14/2008 Just want to clarify so everyone knows. There is a difference between a stun gun and a taser. The taser deploys 15ft of electrifying darts and acts as a stun gun with direct contact. The stun guns require direct contact only and do not use the dart technology.
