A person's next of kin is often a family member, or in some cases a close friend. This is an important person in the planning of the deceased's estate and other records. To notify someone's next of kin is extremely emotional and difficult. Use these steps to learn more about notifying the next of kin and how to do it with compassion and grace.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Find the next of kin. This could be difficult in some cases, but the information should be in updated medical records or employment information. You should compare the 2 records and see which next of kin is more current.
Step2
Gather the belongings and other items that you want the next of kin to take or identify. Think of all areas you need to speak with them about. You will want to try to talk to them about these things immediately, as they will be starting the grieving process and may not be able to help in the days after the notification.
Step3
Call or visit the next of kin. Ideally, you should be face-to-face when notifying the next of kin. It would be appropriate to call and ask them to come to meet with you, if needed. However, you should go into their comfort zone and meet them at their house.
Step4
Be compassionate. Connect with the feelings you are going to see from them and let them know it is all right to lose it a little. Phrase it softly, but bluntly. Grieving minds can go to denial first and you want to make no mistake about what you are telling them.
