How to Have a Bettie Page Hairstyle

When one thinks of classic pinup girls, few names leap to the mind faster than Bettie Page. A beautiful icon of the 1950s, she was best known for her blue eyes, curvy figure and trademark hairstyle. Since the resurgence of her popularity in the 1990s, many women have emulated the Bettie Page hairstyle. It's not too difficult to achieve this look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Be prepared to color your hair for the full "Bettie homage" look; unless, of course, your hair is already dark brown or black. The style can be achieved without dyeing the hair of course, but those who want Bettie's va-va-voom should consider going dark.

    • 2

Have your bangs cut short. The bangs should be equal length across the entire forehead. The bangs need only be long enough to work with rollers or a curling iron.

    • 3

Keep the hair (aside from the short bangs) long, coming past the shoulders at least.

    • 4

Tame the hair into big, soft curls. If your hair is naturally curly, try a relaxing product. Blow dry the hair with a diffuser and a round brush to achieve the big curls. If you have naturally straight hair, set it with big rollers for a few hours. Set the curls with a lightweight hairspray, as the look should appear soft and natural.

    • 5

Use a large curling iron to tame the bangs. They should come straight down but be curled under just enough to add a little bounce and volume. Set with some hairspray.

    • 6

Spice things up by wearing a large flower on the side of the head for special occasions.

I agree. They aren't straight across. I didn't want to totally commit to a Bettie bang all the time, so I have my hair fringy and in long layers, including my bangs, which are just above the eyebrow and pretty thick. When I want to have that Bettie look, I take a curling iron and curl my bangs under, making sure the edges of my bangs are curled so they're higher than the rest of my bangs. I have really straight hair, so if I cut my bangs to resemble Bettie's, it would look kind of dumb.

I agree with both of the previous commentators. I cut my own bangs for this style, knowing most stylists will not get the job done the way I envision it. The bangs are very hard to do if you are not trained. It isn't just a straight across cut. Oh, and the bangs need to be a good way back on the crown, especially if you have thinner hair. I went from no bangs at all to a look that I am somewhat happy with. The difficult part is getting the edges at the temples just right. I noticed that I had to cut them shorter than the middle, but almost at a curve (up and over towards my temples and eyebrows) or arch to get it looking similar. it is very hard to do because it takes patience. it is hard to keep the bangs separated from the rest of the hair. Oh, a good idea would be to cut your bangs while they are dry, and dont cut too much at first! Make sure you have a little bit of room to make a mi

...Not to mention Bettie's bangs don't go straight across. They are slightly longer in the middle of the forehead and shorter close to the temples.
