Environmental consultants take on the role of helping businesses and corporations attain compliance with environmental laws, rules and regulations. Becoming an environmental consultant involves education and experience in your chosen field.

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Master's degree (optional)
  1. Step 1

    Get a degree. Environmental consultants are expected to at least have an undergraduate degree in their chose field of study. Some of these fields of study are Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Policy Analysts. Check with your chosen college or university to see which programs your school offers.

  2. Step 2

    Choose a specialty. This isn't a requirement, but having a specialty will help you get a job in your chosen field when you graduate from college. Some environmental consultant specialties include wastewater management and legal environmental consulting, conservation and ecological surveying.

  3. Step 3

    Study environmental regulations. Being an expert on environmental regulations is required for an environmental consulting career.

  4. Step 4

    Consider a graduate degree. Obtaining a master's degree will not only hone your skills and increase your knowledge in your chosen field of environmental consulting, it also increases your chances of finding the perfect job in this field.

  • Read up on the environmental sciences, political sciences and environmental policy.
  • Speak to a student adviser before enrolling in classes. These advisers have the knowledge and expertise to guide you in deciding which classes to take.
