Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Enamel, glass or stainless steel pan
  • 1/4 cup calendula flowers or petals
  • 1/4 cup comfrey leaf
  • 1/4 cup nettle leaf
  • 1 tbsp. marshmallow root
  • 1 tbsp. comfrey root
  • 2 tsp. powdered myrrh
  • 1-½ pints extra virgin olive oil
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cheesecloth
  • 1-½ oz. beeswax
  • 1 tsp. lavender essential oil
  • 1 tspn. vitamin E
  • Glass jars with lids
Step1
Find a medium-sized enamel, glass or stainless steel pan to make your balm. Measure out 1/4 cup of each of the following to put into the pan: calendula flowers or petals, comfrey leaf and nettle leaf.
Step2
Add 1 tbsp. of each of marshmallow root and comfrey root. Add 2 tsps. of powdered myrrh.
Step3
Measure out 1-½ pints of a good quality extra virgin olive oil in the pan. Mix up the oil and herbs. If there isn't enough oil to completely cover all the herbs in the pan, add more a tiny bit at a time until you have a sufficient amount to do so.
Step4
Simmer the herbs and the oil over low heat in a double boiler for 90 minutes or bake them in a 150 degree oven for two to three hours.
Step5
Wear rubber gloves to protect yourself from the hot oil as you strain the mixture through several layers of cheesecloth. Wring out the cheesecloth to get as much oil out of it as you can. Measure out one pint for the mixture and discard the herbs you have strained out.
Step6
Clean the pan and put the one pint of oil back into it. Add 1 ½ oz. of beeswax to the oil and heat it on a very low setting until the beeswax has melted. Allow to cool for about five minutes.
Step7
Add 1 tsp. of each of lavender essential oil and vitamin E. Stir it up well.
Step8
Pour the mixture into clean glass jars with tight lids. Make sure to label them so you know what is in the jars.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use vitamin E capsules by puncturing the capsule and squirting it out into a teaspoon to measure it out.
  • The mixture will keep for about 12 months and a few months longer than that if kept in the refrigerator.
  • Don't use an aluminum pan to make this mixture.
  • You must cook the herbs over low heat. Cooking with too much heat destroys the medicinal properties of the herbs.

on 1/29/2008 I would like to ask a question about the vitamin E oil. Oils are extremely susceptible to destruction by heat. I see that the recipe calls only for cooling for five minutes before adding the lavender and Vitamin E oils. Wouldn't it be better to cool it compltely before adding these oils?
