Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Ask the dealership if you need insurance when you first purchase the boat. They deal with insurance and with new boat owners all the time, so they may have a good idea of required coverage. If they aren't sure, you may want to wait to make a purchase until after you accurate information.
Step2
Consult an insurance provider to know when it's necessary to have boat insurance. Ask an insurance agent if it's absolutely necessary to carry insurance or if it's optional.
Step3
Call your local insurance provider about whether you need boat insurance. Select the company that holds your home owner's, life or auto insurance. Many insurance companies offer discounts for multiple coverage. Purchase insurance or add your boat to an existing policy.
Step4
Contact the state to find out whether boat insurance is mandatory or optional. The laws of the state govern insurance requirements to operate a boat within the state. You may also be able to find this information on a government website. Inquire at the license bureau when purchasing tags for the boat.
