Everyone's been to a wedding or party where guests have horded the dance floor to do the Electric Slide. But for those who take their line dancing a little more seriously, formal competitions may be the next step. Use this guide to enter competitive line dancing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find local competitions by contacting dance instructors and studios in your area. Take lessons and develop a social network with other line dancers who might be interested in entering competitions.

  2. Step 2

Join a line dancing club or start one of your own. Members may compete against each other or other clubs. Enlist local dance instructors to act as amateur judges. This will help you practice for larger competitions later on.

  3. Step 3

Subscribe to "Linedancer Magazine" for news on events, music, step guides and networking.

  4. Step 4

Research the rules of competition for an established organization like Masters in Line once you've formed a group to compete with. Strict rules must be followed as to the type of dance allowed for each division, costumes, age and number of participants and music.

  5. Step 5

Contact Masters in Line when you're ready to compete in bigger events. This group holds competitions all over the world. Dancers compete all year to qualify for the national finals and then the world championship held in the U.K. in December.

  6. Step 6

Be willing to travel. In order to qualify for the world championship, you must compete in a number of events held in many different locations. But also be prepared to have fun; the social component of these competitions is a big deal.
