Type II diabetes has become an epidemic in America. Particularly distressing is the fact that it has been diagnosed in a number of children, as well. There is good news, however, related to Type II diabetes. It is totally manageable with diet and exercise. Specifically, eating the right foods in the right manner may prevent many of the pitfalls related to this disease.

      Don't miss meals. Blood sugar levels drop when the body doesn't receive a consistent amount of food. Hypoglycemia may be avoided with three regular meals and one or two sensible snacks.

      Eat a balanced diet. Diabetics must learn that a lifestyle change must occur related to eating habits. Food choices must be consistent. Concentrate on a diet that includes small portions of protein and limited fats. Focus on a restrained diet verses a restrictive diet.

      Try fresh foods whenever possible. Many of the issues associated with diabetes stem from the products and processes used to keep food on the shelves for longer periods of time. Foods cooked in heavy oils are also a problem. Steam and bake fresh food whenever possible.

      Avoid carbohydrates. Pastas and other foods high in carbs increase the blood sugar level. Refer to Step 2 regarding a balanced diet and remember that everything must be done in moderation. This includes carbs. Consult a physician to determine the level of carbohydrates that are acceptable for specific patients.
