1
Save your Christmas cards, and use them to make your garland. Cut out the front, tape the most festive cards onto a ribbon and tack the ribbon to the front of the mantel. Cut out shapes from the cards to add even more of a creative touch. If you didn't save last year's cards, hang the ribbon and add the cards as they come in the mail.

Ask the trimmer to save the bottom pieces from your fresh Christmas tree. Cut the branches into single pieces and tack them to the mantel. Overlap the pieces to cover the ends of the branches. Attach lights, red bows and ornaments to your fresh garland as you trim the tree.

Buy a couple extra strands of lights and make a garland of lights. Put pushpins every foot along the mantel and lay the lights over the pins back and forth a couple times. Run an extension cord up the side of the mantle, tacking it into place. Make sure you can get to the plug so you can unplug it at night and when you leave the house.

Wrap a bright red garland around heavy wire and swag it from the mantel. You can then hang some of your smaller, shiny ornaments directly onto the garland.
