How to Follow Nudity Laws

Nudity laws are constantly being challenged in our society, whether it's the right of a woman to breastfeed her baby in public, or the freedom to walk across a college campus in the buff. By carefully reviewing the existing statutes of a certain jurisdiction, you can follow nudity laws.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know when and where nudity is acceptable and not acceptable where you live. For instance, there are few regulations governing nudity on private property (such as in nudist colonies) as long as the nudity isn't easily observable by individuals outside the property. There may also be a distinction between nude sunbathing on a beach, where the nudity laws vary, and public indecency laws, which are almost uniformly strict.

  2. Step 2

Note the distinction in the severity of penalties regarding indecent exposure when children under a certain age are involved. While it may vary in different jurisdictions, penalties for indecent exposure are more strictly enforced when children under the age of 18 are the victims, and even stiffer penalties can be employed again if the child is under the age of 14.

  3. Step 3

Follow nudity laws by checking with the law enforcement officials in the town or jurisdiction where you live. Federal laws concerning nudity and indecency are quite vague, so states and local governments may provide more specific applications of the law. Nudity laws can vary greatly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

  4. Step 4

Check out online resources, such as the website for Nudist Law, to find out about how to follow specific nudist laws in your area (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Be aware of the ever-changing laws concerning the rights of women to breast feed their babies in public. While most laws preserve the right of a woman to do this, and frown upon the idea of this type of activity causing harm, there is quite a bit of controversy stemming from people who object to the sight of a woman exposing her breasts in public for any reason, especially when children are present.

Tips & Warnings
  • Nudity laws are particularly vague and challenging when it comes to children under the age of 18. With the advent of child pornography, and the swift and severe penalties enforced for participation, it may be difficult for a law enforcement official to tell the difference between a child who is merely frolicking in the nude, and a situation that could be interpreted as obscene.
