How to Install LimeWire

LimeWire is a peer-to-peer file-sharing program used to connect computer users so they can share electronic files. Music and movies are commonly traded by LimeWire users to build electronic media libraries. Before you can begin downloading files, you'll need to download and fully install the LimeWire software.

Instructions

  1. Install LimeWire File Sharing Software

    • 1

Open your web browser and navigate to LimeWire's download page. From there, you'll need to select the version of LimeWire designed to run on your computer's operating system. There are multiple LimeWire versions for Mac and PC.

    • 2

Locate the LimeWire installer icon on your computer. Depending on where you've designated your downloads to be stored, the installer could be in several different places. Using your operating system's search feature can help you locate the installer.

    • 3

Launch the LimeWire installer. Though the installation process may differ from computer to computer, there are several key steps that will be similar. Click the "Next" button to begin the installation process.

    • 4

Select a place to install the LimeWire application. Most computers are set up to have an "applications" folder specially designated to store these files. You must also select a location for your LimeWire icon used to open the program.

    • 5

Follow on-screen directions to complete the installation process. It may be necessary to restart your computer.

    • 6

Enter the Set-Up Wizard portion of LimeWire before attempting to use the program.

    • 7

Select which language you would like LimeWire to use.

    • 8

Choose a folder to store your downloaded files and files you wouldn't mind sharing with other users. By using the "Browse Host" option, other LimeWire users will be able to scan the files you keep in this folder. If you need to, you'll be able to change these folder destinations later.

    • 9

Select a connection speed. Options include "Modem" for slower connections or "Cable/DSL" for speedier ones. If you upgrade your Internet speed after installing LimeWire, you'll be able to change this setting by entering the "Tools" menu.

    • 10

Select whether or not you'd like LimeWire to launch automatically when your computer starts.

    • 11

Choose whether or not you'd like to give LimeWire the right to scan your computer for files you can grant other LimeWire users access to.

    • 12

Close the Set-Up Wizard and open the LimeWire application to begin sharing files. Consult the online LimeWire manuals for troubleshooting advice (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • If your Internet connection is configured with a firewall or other security device, you may receive an automatic prompt while installing LimeWire. To install and use LimeWire, you'll have to allow it to bypass your security settings.
