How to Play Pokemon Red
Pokemon Red was one of the original Pokemon games that made it to the United States. The game is essentially the same as the Blue version, but has a few exclusive Pokemon to collect. You may have to do some searching to find a copy of Pokemon Red to play.

1
Look in video-game stores for used copies of Pokemon Red. The game came out in 1998, so you probably won't be able to find a new one. Always ask for a store warranty when you buy a used game.
-
2
Insert Pokemon Red into your Gameboy or Gameboy Advance, and turn the power on to play. You'll probably want to erase the old files and start a new game if you bought a used version.

3
Name your character and learn to control Pokemon Red. The D-pad moves you around and navigates menu options, the A-button confirms commands and talks to people and the B-button cancels commands. The Start-button opens the menu and the Select-button can be used to organize your items.
-
4
Pick your first Pokemon after you watch the opening screens. You have a choice between Charmander (fire), Squirtle (water) and Bulbasaur (grass and poison). Experienced players believe that Squirtle and Bulbasaur are the best choices for a Pokemon novice.
-
5
Catch the Red-specific Pokemon and trade them to your friends who have the Blue version. Some of the Red-only monsters are Ekans, Growlithe, Scyther and Electabuzz. Some of these Pokemon can also evolve into stronger forms.
-
6
Refine your Pokemon team, so that you have access to attacks from all of the elements. You should also consider having one Pokemon on your active team who can provide support abilities while the other ones do most of the fighting.

Tips & Warnings
You can play Pokemon Red using an emulator and Rom image on your computer if you own the original cartridge. You will not be able to trade Pokemon with friends if you play this way.
Once you catch 150 Pokemon, go talk to the programmer in Celedon City. He'll give you a diploma as a reward for your Pokemon-catching skills.
The most common issue with old Pokemon cartridges is the battery that holds saved games. Over time, the battery can die and erase your files.
There is a glitch in some early versions of Pokemon Red that will prevent you from catching the final Pokemon. However, you can still complete the game and finish your Pokedex.
