Using the internet or a phone directory, find a local dealership that specifically sells the brand of car you own. Most dealerships will have several keys for the cars they sell as well as keys from the cars they sold over ten years ago. Ask over the phone before you go if they have keys for your vehicle's model, make, and year.

3
Find any proof that the car is yours. Most people keep this information in the car, but if you have registration notices, insurance information, or the car's title, all of these things will do.
-
4
Take public transportation or convince a friend to take you to the dealership along with your VIN and proof of ownership.
-
5
Explain to the dealership your specific situation and ask for a spare key. If they don't have extras already, they can make you one on the spot. Usually they'll charge about $10 for the service, but 10 bucks beats damaging your car with a wire hanger or paying $40 for a locksmith to open the car for you. Plus, now you have a spare key!
Tips & Warnings
Be as honest and cordial with the employee at the dealership as you can. If they suspect that you will use the key to break into a car that isn't yours, they won't help you.
Keep the car's title somewhere other than in the vehicle. In a situation like this, the title will help you resolve the problem better than anything else.
Bring your identification with you when you go to the dealership. This seems like a no-brainer, but it's still worth mentioning.
Keep your new spare key somewhere accessible. Dealerships keep records of keys they give out, so they won't likely help you again.
Never use this advice to access a car that isn't yours, even if you are doing it to help a friend. The owner must show up at the dealership in person to get a key.
