Crumb crusts are not only easy to make, but also add an extra flavor to the cheesecake your making. Choosing an Oreo crumb crust, for example, adds chocolate, while a graham cracker crust might be a healthier option that still provides extra sweetness. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Cookies or crackers (Oreo, graham, ginger snaps, for example)
  • White granulated sugar
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg
  • Butter or margarine
  • Free-form or other loose-bottom baking pan
  • Mallet or large spoon
  • Large bowl

Instructions

      Place your cookies or crackers in a plastic bag and break them into crumbs using a mallet or large spoon.

      Put the crumbs and the other ingredients into the ball and toss them together until the butter is entirely mixed in. The crumbs should be moist but not sticky.

      Pour the mixture into the baking pan. Using four fingers of one hand, press the mixture into the sides of the pan until they are covered, then press the rest into the bottom.

      Place the pan on a baking sheet and bake at 325 degrees F for five minutes, or until light golden brown.

Tips & Warnings

  • When pressing into the sides use your four fingers and press tightly to the side of the pan, it takes some practice but it can make it faster.

  • You can use any cookie that crumbles, Oreos, graham crackers, gingersnaps, vanilla wafer cookies...anything.

  • Careful when placing in the oven to not hit anything, crumb crust falls easy.

    It literally takes minutes, in a restaurant sometimes that is all you have! Like I said, be careful you don't bump anything on the way into the oven though, it will fall as fast as it goes up.

    I admit I usually make my cakes/pies with store bought, pre-made crust. This sounds pretty easy, though. I MIGHT try making my own next time.
