As 64-bit processors are becoming more common it's becoming much easier to find 64-bit OS disks and drivers. Microsoft offers 64-bit versions of all forms of Windows Vista, although only Windows Vista Ultimate comes with the 64-bit version in the box. For all other forms of Vista it is possible to request a 64-bit version of the OS, but only after you have purchased a 32-bit version. The 64-bit copy is free with the exception of the shipping and handling charge.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 32-bit version of Windows Vista
  • Internet connection
  • credit card

Step1
Browse to the "Windows Vista Alternate Media" page using any Internet browser.
Step2
Select your "Ship-to" country from the dropdown list on the main page. Afterwards you can click "Order Now."
Step3
Locate the Windows Vista Product Key that comes included with the 32-bit version of Windows Vista and enter it into the first field. The second field requires you to enter the random string of letters displayed above it; this verifies that you're not an automated script. After entering both pieces of information click "Continue."
Step4
Find the line that says "Windows Vista [Version Name] 64-bit DVD - English" and choose "Order Now." The version name will be whatever form of windows you imputed the code for on the previous screen. Please note that this version of Windows only comes on DVDs; at this time there are no 64-bit versions of Windows Vista on CD.
Step5
Enter your credit card and shipping information into the fields on the last page. Remember that there is a shipping cost (currently $9.95). When you're finished click on "Continue" and then you'll be done.

Tips & Warnings

  • You also can use this process to order 32-bit versions of Windows on CD.
