Instructions

    • 1

Drink plenty of water. The heated room acts as a detoxifier for your body and promotes increased flexibility. What the heat does is promote sweating, which leads to dehydration. Drinking plenty of water before class will prevent you from becoming dehydrated.

    • 2

Wear the proper clothing. Light, breathable natural fibers such as cotton, will wick the moisture away from you body and help your body to cool down naturally.

    • 3

Eat a light meal at least three hours before class. Heat, combined with physical activity can make you feel sick to your stomach. Eating a light salad or fruit a couple of hours before class will keep your energy level high during class without making you feel sick.

    • 4

Get a yoga mat. You will sweat profusely during your Bikram yoga class; bring your own mat to avoid slipping on the floor as well as a towel to wipe the sweat off your body.

    • 5

Pack a few bottles of water. You will need to keep hydrated during class so pack at least two bottles of water to drink during class.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do some light stretches before class. This will prepare your body for your Bikram yoga class and help to prevent injury.

  • Bikram yoga is demanding both physically and mentally, so be prepared to work your body hard during a Bikram workout.

  • Rent a yoga mat if you are not sure that Bikram yoga is for you. Most yoga classes rent mats relatively cheaply.

  • Do not take Bikram yoga if you are pregnant. This type of yoga raises your core body temperature, which is not good for pregnant women.

  • Although Bikram is a physically demanding yoga workout, don't push your body too far. You will end up with sprained and strained muscles.
