There are a number of ways to lighten blonde hair, from expensive highlights to very simple, time proven methods that cost practically nothing. If you've taken the hair salon highlight route one too many times and are tired of paying for salon highlights that look too much like salon highlights, then follow these steps to best lighten blonde hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Try lemon and the sun. The single most effective way of lightening blonde hair is by exposing it to the sun. Over time the sun will make almost any hair color lighter, especially blonde hair. Add lemon to your hair to speed the process, and make sure to use quality conditioners in the evening to keep your hair moisturized and undamaged.

  2. Step 2

Use chamomile. You might think chamomile's only purpose in life is to relax you in the form of a tea before bed. However, boiling chamomile and rinsing it through your hair will lighten it, no matter how blond it is. The amount of time and rinses required to get the perfect tint will take some experimentation, so go slowly and monitor the effects as you go.

  3. Step 3

Rhubarb it up. Another excellent natural hair lightener is rhubarb, even for blonde hair. The process for lightening blond hair with rhubarb is simple: cut the vegetable into small pieces and then boil it until it is soft. Let the water and rhubarb cool and then rinse it through your hair. Do this a few times and watch the effect. You can also add more rhubarb to the mixture to increase the lightening effect.

  4. Step 4

Make an infusion. If you really want to find the best method of lightening your blonde hair, make an infusion that suits your specific hair composition. Use a mixture of saffron, marigold and turmeric and experiment with the proportions to find the right color for your hair. You can also try adding oat straw and licorice root for some extra shine.
