Step 1
Shave later. Wait at least 20 minutes after getting out of bed to shave. Sleeping causes skin to puff up from body fluids and hide the hairs. Wait until the skin becomes taut again.
-
Step 2
Shave after your morning workout. Acid from sweat will irritate newly shaved skin, so shave after your morning exercise routine.
-
Step 3
Soften your whiskers. Don't dry your face after a shower and wait a few minutes before shaving. Apply a shaving gel or foam while the face is still wet.
-
Step 4
Shave in short strokes. People tend to press down harder when using longer strokes. This causes more friction, which causes razor burn. Use short, light strokes to avoid razor burn.
-
Step 5
Shave in the same direction that the hair grows. For most men, this means shaving using downward strokes. While shaving the opposite direction may give a closer shave, those who suffer from razor burn should avoid this practice.
-
Step 6
Keep your razor clean. Use alcohol to clean your razor. Used blades harbor bacteria, which can get into your skin's pores and cause it to burn.
