How to Remove an External Hard Drive From its Case

Do you need to change out the hard drive in an external hard drive case? I will teach you how to do so.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

• Screw driver (Phillips or flat head depending on screws)

1. Depending on the style of external hard drive you have will depend on the steps you have use.
   
   Turn off the external hard drive.
2. Unplug all plugs leading to the external hard drive.
3. Unscrew all screws on outer casing or pull plastic moldings off of the case. (I personally have had both types.)
4. Open up the external hard drive case and locate all plugs inside leading from case to hard drive.
5. Unscrew any screws in the bottom of the hard drive.
6. Once the hard drive is unscrewed from the bottom plate, unplug the power plug and the ribbon cable.
7. To put a new hard drive into the case, simply follow the instructions from last to first.

Tips & Warnings

• Always make sure there is no power and that your external hard drive is NOT plugged in to avoid shock hazard.
