How to Insure an RV

Buying a recreational vehicle can be one of the best decisions you ever make. RVs give you flexibility and adventure on your doorstep that you can rarely find elsewhere. You probably put a lot of thought into buying your RV, so it makes sense to insure it with the same care and attention.

Instructions

    • 1

Know what to cover. Unlike basic auto insurance, there are some additional things to consider when finding coverage for your RV. Check that the fixtures, furnishings and appliances inside the RV are covered for damage and theft as well as the regular vehicle coverages.

    • 2

Shop around. Like insuring anything, there are a large number of companies to choose from. Do some research into the different policies are prices that are on offer. The easiest way to get multiple quotes is online (see resources) but check that you receive full personal quotes not just standard pricing.

    • 3

See how flexible the policy is. Your needs may change throughout the year as you use the RV more or less than usual. Look to see if there are any time restrictions on parking and traveling. If the RV is your primary residence, then you will need home owner's type liability insurance. Make sure that you will receive emergency living expenses if necessary.

    • 4

Find the loopholes. Even if you have found a reasonably priced policy, check your coverage. There is no point in buying a discount policy if it doesn't cover anything. Ensure that all your property is included and that the limitations are sufficient. Also, check the claims procedure and small print. If you are insuring with an online company, find out how you would go about making a claim if anything did happen.
