Gamers needed to head to their local arcade to play their favorite games before Playstation and Xbox hit the scene. Maintain an Arcade Game Collection

Step1
Generate a list of video repair shops, collectors and other video game experts as you begin to collect arcade games. These resources are invaluable in helping you find rare games or inexpensive arcade sales in your community.
Step2
Begin your collection of arcade games by purchasing mint condition units from a video game collector. Collectors repair and maintain arcade games so they operate in peak condition. You should negotiate for one or two arcade games you enjoy to form the cornerstone of your collection.
Step3
Test out arcade games that you want to add to your collection before making a purchase. You should inspect the interior of an arcade machine while looking at audio and visual functioning. A quick peek at the central control board is important for potential renovations after purchase.
Step4
Hunt down deals on arcade games that have poor appearance and visible exterior wear. You should be concerned with the performance of an arcade game for your collection because it is simple to clean up the exterior.
Step5
Keep an eye out for closing restaurants, arcades and other businesses that may have a collection of arcades. You can find newer arcade games in good condition at prices lower than retail. This approach works best with local companies where an owner is trying to recoup as much money as possible during the closing process.
Step6
Schedule an appointment with a professional appraiser after you have reconditioned and repaired arcade games in your collection. You should get an appraisal and official statement indicating the condition of arcade games to help sell your games to other collectors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cultivate a collection space for arcade games within your home. Garages and spare bedrooms are ideal for collectors because they offer easy access, space and a place for friends to enjoy these games. You also need to have enough outlets to operate multiple arcade games at the same time.
  • Write out the goals and direction of your arcade games collection before your first purchase. Your approach to negotiations, repairs and game research will differ if you collect games for eventual sale instead of entertainment.

on 4/26/2008 These are some good starting suggestions for collecting classic arcade games, but I am not sure I agree with the suggestion about buying mint condition arcade classics from other collectors. Typically, a collector will not restore a game to mint condition to then sell off to the general public. This is more of an arcade shop, and they will use materials that are not faithful to the original (sticker artwork instead of stenciled for example). Just think in general terms, would a car collector restore a beautiful favorite vehicle just to sell it? I think not.

The beauty of collecting arcade games is the process of restoring them. You want to buy them a little bit in disrepair so you can use your electronic, wood working and artwork skills to bring them back to their glory.
