1. The first thing you need to do is find software that will work for your purposes. My favorite is Primo PDF. It is simple to download, easy to use and best of all, it's free! Once you get to more complex e-books you may want to upgrade to one of the paid versions or a different brand of PDF converter that will allow you to embed videos, etc, but if you are just starting out, this should work just fine!

2. To download go to www.primopdf.com and right in the middle of the screen is a big orange "Download Now". When you click on it, another window will open to www.download.com. Again, click the big blue "Download Now" in the middle of the screen.

3. Save the file to your desktop and once it downloads, open it and it will walk you through the installation steps.

4. Once you have the program downloaded and installed, you are ready to create your first e-book! Open the word document that you want to convert and proof it for final changes or corrections. Don't forget to spell check and check the consistency of your format, tabs, etc. A neat, well-organized e-book lets people know that you are a professional and a worthy source of expertise on the topic at hand.

5. Once you are sure that your word document is your final draft, save it and then go to File>Print in your taskbar. If you scroll the drop down list to choose a printer, you will see that Primo PDF is now listed as one of your printer options. Choose Primo PDF as your printer and click OK.

6. A new window will open up from Primo PDF that will give you the option of screen, print or custom format. For an e-book you will choose custom and then choose e-book, click OK. Below the format, you will see "Save As" and a location bar. This will indicate where your new e-book will be saved once it is converted. You can click to the right of the bar to browse and choose a new location for your e-book.

7. Admire your work! A new window will open with your PDF reader (the popular one is Adobe Reader) and there is your e-book! Your word document will still exist in its same location and can be used to edit the text for future revisions of your e-book.
