The raw food diet is composed of uncooked, unprocessed whole plant-based foods. Some proponents of this diet say that at least 75 percent of the food should be uncooked, while others adhere to a 100 percent uncooked diet. A raw food diet is said to improve overall health and strengthen the immune system because of the enzymes in the uncooked food. Enzymes are essential to food absorption and digestion. Raw food diet advocates believe that once food reaches 116 degrees F in the cooking process, it begins to lose all of its enzymes.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the structure of the raw food diet. The typical raw food diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, grains, beans, nuts, legumes, seeds, seaweed, freshly squeezed juice, purified water and other nonprocessed foods.

  2. Step 2

Learn how to prepare raw food. There are several techniques to use: blending, chopping, soaking and dehydrating. The dehydrator is the only "cooking" that is allowed. It prepares food by blowing hot air under 116 degrees F through the food.

  3. Step 3

Use the right equipment. Certain items are essential when preparing a raw food diet. Use a dehydrator and good-quality juicer to make fresh fruit and vegetable juice. Get a blender, processor or chopper to make smoothies, soups, dips and salads. Several large glass containers will come in handy for soaking and sprouting seeds, grains and beans. Also use these containers to store prepared food.

Tips & Warnings
  • A raw food diet may not be appropriate for children, pregnant/nursing women or those diagnosed with anemia.
  • Consult with your doctor before beginning a raw food diet.
