Wing Chun has two main weapons--the butterfly sword and the long pole. A long pole is traditionally called "lim dim book guan." This means "6 1/2 point pole" and refers to techniques. There are several places that sell the poles, but only a few are true to the tradition of the sport. The following steps will help you find a quality Wing Chun long pole.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a pole that is the correct length. Most Wing Chun poles that are sold today are 9 feet long because shipping companies won't ship anything longer. These poles are acceptable, but if you can find a longer pole, this is also good. The poles will weigh between 5 and 6 lbs. depending on the wood used.

  2. Step 2

Buy a pole that has tapering. There are also several poles on the market that are not tapered. These will work, but a true pole is tapered, starting at about 1 inch at one end and increasing to 1 1/4 inches to 1 3/4 inches at the tip.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a pole that is made of a heavy and flexible wood such as China's Qwan Din wood. This wood is very expensive and found only in China. This adds to the price. American wood is mostly new growth forest wood and is not as sturdy and flexible as the exotic woods. Qwan Din wood varies as well. The Qwan Din tree has an outer ring of wood and an inner ring of wood. The outer wood is the heavy, flexible wood you want.

  4. Step 4

Consider the price of the pole. The Wing Chun long pole is a cherished weapon and emanates pride and learning. These poles come as individual poles or in groups of poles. The groups of poles are sold to Wing Chun schools and can be purchased directly from the school. Other poles can be purchased online for about $120. Ask your Wing Chun instructor where to find the perfect pole for you.
