An MSN Messenger user can change their contact name any time they choose. When they do, it will change in your contact list as well. This can get annoying because when the name changes, you have no idea who the new name on your contact list is or how they got there. To prevent this confusion, you can change your contacts' nicknames to anything you choose. The following will show you how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • MSN Messenger account
  • Contact in Friends List
  1. Step 1

Access your Messenger account by double clicking on the "MSN Messenger" icon.

  2. Step 2

Sign into your MSN Messenger account with your user name and password.

  3. Step 3

Pull up your "Friends List." Find the "Contact" name on the list that you would like to change.

  4. Step 4

Right click on the Contact name in this list. Doing so will pull up a drop down menu next to the Contact name on your Friends List.

  5. Step 5

Scroll down this menu until you find "Edit Nickname." Click on this link with the left key on your mouse. The current name will become highlighted. Type in the name you would like to appear and simply click off the name or press the "Enter" key.

  6. Step 6

Notice that the name you have typed is now the new name of your Contact on your Friends List.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also choose "Edit Contact" from the drop down menu. This will give you a form where you can change information including a space for "Nickname." Type in the new nickname you would like for your Contact in this box and press the "Enter" key.
  • In this "Edit Contact" section, you can also place your Contact in a different Friend grouping on your Friends List.
