The art of motorcycle jumping is an impressive and exciting craft that has been honed by many great riders over the decades. If you would like to carry on this tradition of motorized acrobatics, check out these steps to help you start jumping your motorcycle over fences.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Get a ramp that is high enough to launch you and your bike over the fence without being so steep that you'll lose much speed on the way up. It is possible to take measurements, make calculations and design a very exact and safe jump set-up, but most people just guess.
Step2
Approach the jump in a straight line, from a good distance so you have plenty of time to get up to speed. Stand on the pegs with your knees bent.
Step3
Keep the bike as straight as possible on the ramp, as the front wheel approaches the lip of the ramp, push down on the handle bars and compress the fork springs. As the front wheel hits the top of the ramp pull up on the handlebars and decompress the springs; this causes the bike to hop and will help it get a little more lift.
Step4
Look at the spot where you plan to land while you are in the air. If you are landing on flat ground you'll want your back wheel to hit first. If you are landing on a down ramp you will want to land at the same angle as the ramp.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some jumps need to be done at certain speeds, so it is important to have your speed up before hitting the ramp as acceleration on the ramp can cause a loss of control.
  • To get the rear wheel to drop while in the air release the clutch and rev the engine. The spinning of the back wheel cause the rear of he motorcycle to drop. Be sure to let off the gas before hitting the ground.
  • To lower the front of the bike while you are in the air, pull in the clutch and tap the rear brakes. This will cause the back wheel to lock up, raising the rear of the motorcycle.
  • Confidence is key when jumping motorcycles so start small and work your way up.
  • Jumping fences on a motorcycle is very dangerous and probably should not be done.
