Gem mining in the United States is a popular travel past time. One of the most popular states for gem mining is North Carolina. Deep within the Great Smoky Mountain region are a number of very active and successful gem mines. These mines welcome both the novice and the expert miner.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Decide what mine you want to visit for the day. Most mines in western North Carolina are open from spring to fall.
Step2
Prepare for the day by bringing along a hat, rubber gloves, sunscreen and insect repellent. Some mines have a covered area under the flumes, but some are in direct sun.
Step3
Bring along a cushion or some old towels to sit on. Seating is on wooden benches up next to the flume and they can get uncomfortable if you're staying a long time.
Step4
Pack a picnic lunch so you can stay and mine all day.
Step5
Don't dress up. Mining is a dirty business so wear something that can get muddy.
Step6
Purchase a bucket of gem dirt at the admission office. Some mines also charge a general admission price.
Step7
Take a seat along the flume and begin dumping your gem dirt into the screen provided. Wash your dirt in the water and begin looking for gems when the dirt is washed away. Most mines have attendants available to help with identification.

Tips & Warnings

  • Gem mining is a fun and safe family activity, so feel free to bring the kids along. Just be sure you don't try to do too much mining in one day if you have little ones.
  • There are plenty of valuable gems waiting to be discovered at gem mines. Don't be surprised if you find some things of real value during your visit. Look for rubies, a variety of quartz crystals and sapphire, among others.
