If your child has decided upon a bug theme for their birthday party and you are at a loss of what to do, there are a lot of creative ideas to choose from. The following will give you suggestions for invitations, activities and food for your child's bug birthday party.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bug-themed plates, cups and napkins
  • Tablecloth
  • Bug cake
  • Candies
  • Small plastic flies or bug fruit snacks

    Send Invitations

  1. Step 1

Purchase bug party-themed invitations at a party store or department store to send out to your potential party guests.

  2. Step 2

Make your own invitations instead by using bright green cardstock paper and folding it into a card. Cut the card into a leaf shape and stick bug stickers to the leaf. You can also make your card into any bug shape.

  3. Step 3

Place all the party information inside the card. Insert a map if you need to and mark the designated party area by drawing a bug on the map or using a bug sticker.

  4. Play Party Games and Make Crafts

  5. Step 1

Buy a bag of small plastic bugs and hide them outside around the backyard. Give each child a bag and have them hunt for bugs. To make it extra fun, give them each a stick and tell them they have to get the bugs into their bags without touching them with their hands.

  6. Step 2

Play pin the spider on the web, pin the bee on the flower or pin the ladybug on the leaf. Draw one of these backgrounds--a web, flower or leaf--on a large piece of poster board and give each child a cutout of a spider, bee or ladybug with a piece of tape on the back. Cover their eyes, turn them three times and have them pin the item as close to a certain spot you designate as possible.

  7. Step 3

Divide the children up into teams and give each team a sleeping bag. Have them race to a certain point and back without touching the floor with anything but the sleeping bag. The team to have all their players reach the finish line first wins.

  8. Step 4

Paint small to medium-size round stones as bugs. These can be used as paper weights, pet rocks or outside decorations.

  9. Step 5

Create spiders with four black pipe cleaners and a large black bead. Thread the pipe cleaners into the bead, making the bead in the middle and bend the spider legs into the shape you desire to make it look like a big black spider. Paint eyes on the bead with white paint.

  10. Step 6

Purchase or make a bug piñata for the party. Add toy bugs to the lot of candy inside the piñata.

  11. Select Decorations and Food

  12. Step 1

Purchase bug-themed plates, cups, napkins and a tablecloth for your party. You can also put plain white table cloths on the tables and have party guests decorate them by drawing their own bugs on the tables.

  13. Step 2

Create a bug cake by making the cake into any bug shape, drawing your child's bug of choice onto the cake with icing or by sticking plastic bugs into the cake. For example, you can make a caterpillar, spider, ladybug or ant cake. Use gumdrops for the eyes, shoelace licorice for legs and other candies such as sweet tarts, smarties or gumballs for decoration.

  14. Step 3

Make ladybug cupcakes by putting red or orange icing on the cake and adding black dots. Also add the eyes and shoelace licorice for the antennae.

  15. Step 4

Freeze bug ice cubes for the drinks. Put toy flies or bug fruit snacks in the middle of each ice cube. Add a small amount of green food coloring to the water before pouring it into the cubes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Party hats can be made with a headband, two pipe cleaners rounded into a loose slinky shape and two small Styrofoam balls. Make these into antennae hats by wrapping the pipe cleaners to the headband and gluing the balls to the top of each pipe cleaner.
  • Send your invites at least three weeks in advance so your party guests will have plenty of time to make plans to attend.
  • Give a goodie bag to each guest. They can decorate their own goodie bags with bug stickers or purchase bug themed bags at a party store. They can fill their own bags if you have a piñata or put your own candy and bug toys into the bags.
  • Don't put toy flies into the ice cubes if there will be small children at the party, Tell the kids ahead of time if you do this.
