If you've had your Tablet PC for a couple of years, it may be time for you to update the operating system. New operating systems can provide you with improved functions, such as better recognition of your handwriting. You may also need to install an operating system on your Tablet PC if you begin to experience problems with it and can no longer start your current operating system.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tablet PC with a CD drive
  • Operating system CD

Prepare Your Tablet PC for a New Operating System

Step1
Ensure that your Tablet PC meets the requirements of the operating system that you plan to install. If you do not know the specifications of your Tablet PC, you can view the system information in the Control Panel or check your Tablet PC's manual.
Step2
Create a backup copy of your files. When you install a new operating system, there is a chance that all your data will be lost.
Step3
You can create a backup copy on removable media such as a CD or DVD, a network folder or external hard drive.

Upgrade Your Tablet PC With a New Operating System

Step1
Insert the operating system CD into the CD drive of your Tablet PC. Depending on the operating system that you are installing, this may launch the installation procedure. If it does not, you can manually launch the installation by navigating to the "Setup" file.
Step2
Follow the instructions that appear on your Tablet PC during the setup process. In addition to providing information such as account names and passwords, you may also need to enter a registration key for the operating system.
Step3
Ensure that all of your files are still present on your Tablet PC. If any files are missing, use your backup copy to restore them on your Tablet PC.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot start your current operating system, you can install the system again by booting up with the operating system CD inserted in the CD drive.
  • If you are performing a clean install of a new operating system, all of the information on your Tablet PC will be erased. In addition to backing up your files, you will also need to reinstall programs.
  • Be sure that the operating system supports Tablet PCs. Operating systems for Tablet PCs may include handwriting recognition tools and rotate the screen automatically for convertible Tablet PCs.
  • If your Tablet PC does not have an internal CD drive, you will need an external CD drive to install a new operating system from a CD.
