How to Insert a Line Break in HTML

If you want to insert blank lines or end a line of text before it reaches the right margin, you need a line break tag. Though it seems similar to the paragraph tag, the important difference is that paragraphs define blocks of text that carry certain formatting, whereas a line break is more or less a carriage return. It carries no implications for formatting.

Step1
Start up your HTML editing software and select the location where you want to insert your line break.
Step2
Insert the following code:

Repeat the previous step for every blank line you want inserted in your web page.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use a succession of line break tags to create empty vertical space.
  • If you really want the text following a line break to function as a new paragraph, whether that means being indented or otherwise formatted distinctively as a paragraph, you should be using paragraph tags instead of line break tags.
