If you have a good veterinarian who also practices equine dentistry, count yourself lucky. Not only is equine dentistry time-consuming, it is physically demanding. The care of your horse's teeth is critical to his health and performance under saddle. You need to find someone who is a reputable veterinarian or trained equine dentist and dedicated to providing first-rate dental care for your horse.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Speak with your veterinarian. Many equine veterinarians now also practice dentistry, or they can recommend a reputable equine dentist.

  2. Step 2

Some equine dentists are not veterinarians. If you decide to use an equine dentist who is not a veterinarian, ask for referrals from veterinarians who work with the dentist. Also check out your state laws as it is illegal for non-veterinarians to practice equine dentistry in some states.

  3. Step 3

Talk with your fellow boarders, your trainer and other trusted horse people. They may be able to recommend an equine dentist. It is always easier, if only for your peace of mind, to go with a dentist referred to you by someone you trust.

  4. Step 4

Contact one of the two major equine dental associations in the United States: the American Veterinary Dental Society or the International Association of Equine Dentists (see Resources below). Either organization can provide you with a list of certified, highly regarded dentists in your area. Contacting the International Directory of Equine Dentistry is another option for finding an equine dentist, if your veterinarian, trainer and barn pals cannot help you find one.

  5. Step 5

Contact an equine dentist and ask about her practice, experience, schooling, specialties and rates. Asking appropriate, courteous questions can help you decide between two dentists or learn more about a practitioner you have never worked with.

  6. Step 6

Ask the dentist for references. Call them and ask about their experience with the dentist.

  7. Step 7

Once you decide upon a dentist, schedule your appointment and then keep to a regular check-up schedule.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your equine dentist happy. If he comes to your barn, give him a clean, shady place to work. If you go to his facility, arrive on time. Pay promptly and give good equine dentists good references.
