Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a step aerobics platform from your local sporting goods store. These platforms come with adjustable heights and are the correct size and weight for doing all kinds of step aerobic exercises.

  2. Step 2

Put on comfortable shoes with good arch support. Wear comfortable, non-baggy clothes.

  3. Step 3

Get used to using the platform by stepping up and down on the step, one foot at a time. When you step, your feet should land flat-footed and rest completely on the platform.

  4. Step 4

Learn a few step aerobics routines. The Basic Right to Left, Split Basic, and Over the Top routines are a good place to start for beginners.

  5. Step 5

Play music while you're exercising and switch your moves for a fun, creative workout.

  6. Step 6

Increase the difficulty of your routines as you gain more experienced. Many step aerobic moves include kicks and turns that add variety to your workout.

Tips & Warnings
  • Maintain good posture when doing step aerobics. Hold your chest high while keeping your upper body relaxed. Keep your abs tight.
  • Choose upbeat music that will allow you to do your routine at a comfortable but fast pace. The ideal step aerobics music is about 140 beats per minute.
  • Always warm up and cool down before and after an exercise session.
  • Don't bow your head when you're stepping. If you must look at your feet to see where you are stepping, glance down for just a second. However, try to keep your head facing forward.
  • Don't stomp when you are stepping. Use soft, flat-footed steps. Don't put extra pressure on your feet.
